Rob has been one of the leaders and innovators in his field for more than two decades.
Respected throughout the industry and by manufacturers of the worlds best film, video
and HD equipment, Rob has been sought after for his input and evaluation of new software,
lenses, camera's, filmstocks and techniques.
As one of the buiest DP's in Hollywood through the 90's and early 2000's, Rob built a reputation
for delivering exceptional quality, on schedule and on budget..something many in the industry believe
to be impossible. To do this he used his experience across all genres' TV news, documentaries,
TV commercials, TV series, Mini Series, Tele Features and Feature Films to hone a set of skills
which give him the ability to look inside a production, assess the essence of what is needed and quickly
evaluate the best approach from a shooting and lighting perspective. The vast amount of time
was spent filming in 35mm but his approach to video lighting impressed those developing the new
HD systems.
Rob set about learning the systems and for many years was an advocate for HD, long before it was accepted,
as a viable means of production. He spent many years shooting and evaluating tests and teaching fledgling
HD workshops...attended by many who are now using many of his techniques.
In 1998 Rob saw the emergence on video on the web as being the "next big thing" and he set about
building a deep knowledge base on all that would be required to deliver exceptional quality on the web.
Of course back then, WAY back then (11 years ago) video on the web was still only 100x100 pixels and
took a wek to download....but the line was drawn and the wheels were set in Motion.
2003 Rob launched www.thecoastofmaine.com ab experimental website built on broadcast standard video
shot on professional camera's and encoded with the best codecs in 16:9 with an image size most had
never seen. The clips, focusing on insights into the Coast of Maine, were small (30-40MB) by todays standard
and took forever to download....but those who could see them were amazed.
COM paved the way for what was to come. In September 2006 Rob launched Singlemalt TV an Internet
TV channel devoted to the whiskies of the world. The goal was to deliver a premium branding experience
to a global, targeted, niche audience.
All shot in Scotland in Hi Definition, again to full broadcast standards, the video was an instant hit met with
applauds from the audience and a lot of chin scratching from within the industry..."why the hell would you
shoot in HD...when its only for the web?"
Well the quality spoke for itself. Delievered over dedicated CDN's the video was stunning and HUGE.
Again the audience had not seen anything like it and again it pushed the boundaries.
Of course nowadays, everyone is shooting HD (or a variant thereof) for the web so Rob is again experimenting
and looking at pushing to the next level
With all this experience Rob has been well placed to impart some of his knowledge to others.
He is an engaging and entertaining speaker, relates very well to large audiences, can relay
complex technical concepts with ease and shares his knowledge as an open book.
Interested in workshops about operating, lighting, HD, Film or just how to run an efficient production
